St. Petersburg wins Russian Team Championship

The "Horsemen" won eight of their nine matches and finished three points ahead of their closest rivals. Top scorer of the team was Maxim Matlakov (pictured), European Champion 2017. Russian Team Championship 2020

"The Bronze Horsemen" started with the following line-up:

  2. Maxim Matlakov
  3. Vladimir Fedoseev
  4. Konstantin Sakaev
  5. Ildar Khairullin
  6. Pavel Ponkratov
  7. Aleksey Goganov
  8. Aleksandr Shimanov

The Championship was a round-robin with ten teams, which played on six boards. St. Petersburg was leading from the start and by winning their first eight matches they secured the title with one round to go.

Top-scorer of the team was Maxim Matlakov, European Champion 2017. He scored 5.5/7, and in round 8 he won a crucial game in which why the attacking side is usually better in endings with rooks and opposite-coloured bishops.
