The Power Play Show: An online blitz brilliancy by Magnus Carlsen

by Daniel King
4/10/2020 – In today's Power Play Show Grandmaster Daniel King first presents an interesting position from a current game and then takes a look at a spectacular blitz game that Magnus played online a few days ago. Power Play is on air most Fridays at 17:00 UK (18:00 CEST, Noon EST) on playchess.com. -for a limited time you can watch the episode for free! All the usual puzzles, games and instruction will be on offer. Puzzle and the live video...

Scarcely any world champion has managed to captivate chess lovers to the extent Carlsen has. The enormously talented Norwegian hasn't been systematically trained within the structures of a major chess-playing nation such as Russia, the Ukraine or China.

An online blitz brilliancy by Magnus Carlsen

First I'll be taking a look at this position from an actual game. In fact play is similar to the kind of studies we have been examining on the show over the past few weeks. This position requires some deft steps with the king, and once again we discover how strong queens are when they reappear on an open board!

But first let's take a lot at an endgame: Black is a pawn up but can he win?

Here's a teaser:

Checkmate. That's the aim of the game. There are numerous ways to checkmate the enemy king, but there are common patterns that recur over and over again, and having these at our mental fingertips is essential for when we want to finish the game.
