Onischuk, Pogonina win Moscow Open

2/10/2009 – A total prize fund of seven million Rubles (almost $200,000) make it one of the best-paid open events in the world. Actually there are seven tournaments. The top "Open A" was won by Alexander Onischuk from the USA, while Natalija Pogonona won the women's "Open C” by a full point. The International Chess Festival “Moscow Open 2009” too place from January 30 (arrival) – February 9 (departure), 2009. The venue was the Russian State Social University (RSSU) in Moscow. The event consisted of seven separate tournaments: “Open A”, “Open B”, "Women's Open C”, "School Chess Champions “Open D”, "School Chess Team tournament Open E”, "Cup of Rector of RSSU among chess teams of Universities Open F”, "World Cup on Chess Compositions Solving Open G”. A total of 1579 participants from 34 countries competed for a total prize fund of seven million Rubles (150,000 Euros or US $195,000), making the Moscow Open one of the biggest in the world.

Onischuk, Pogonina win

Grandmaster Alexander Onischuk of the USA won the main tournament of the festival. In final round his game with Sergey Tiviakov (NED) ended in a draw and he finished at 7.5 points from 9 games, winning the first prize of 500,000 Rubles (€ 10,750 or $14,000). Half a point behind him we find five GMs who shared 2nd - 6th places. The tiebreak system gave silver to Sergey Tiviakov (NED) and bronze to Ernesto Inarkiev (RUS). A total of 17 participants scored by 6.5 points.

Natalija Pogonona won the women's tournament “C”. She defeated Marina Romanko and scored eight points from nine games, a full point more than any other participant. She won 150,000 Rubles (€3230 or $4190).
