Olympiad R9: Armenia and China falter in ninth round mixup

11/23/2008 – Two major shocks pulled the two teams that had been leading all the way away from the top: Armenia lost to Israel in the open section, and the overpowering Chinese lost to Serbia in the women's section. 38th Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008

The Olympiad is taking place from November 12th to 25th, 2008, in the Congress Hall in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. 156 teams from 152 nations are participating, with most of the top players present.

Round nine Open Section

The shocker was Armenia's loss to Israel, with Levon Aronian traumatically losing a rook ending to perennial Boris Gelfand. The final score was 2½:1½. Meanwhile Ukraine beat Russia, with the top three boards drawing and Alexander Morozevich losing to Zahar Efimenko. The result: Israel has taken the lead in the 38th Olympiad, with 16/19 match points, followed by Armenia and Ukraine, with 15/18 each. Behind them are China, England and Serbia, all with 14/18. Russia is in the next group of nine teams with 13/18 each.

China suffered a shock loss to Serbia (in spite of a win by Hou Yifan), while Poland defeated the US and Ukraine Romania, both by 3:1. Live coverage on Playchess

A selection of 32 games will be broadcast live on our chess server Playchess.com. There will also be live video interviews with players after their games. If you are not a member of the Playchess community (which as of Monday, November 8th 2008 had 307,966 registered users) you can download the free PGN reader ChessBase Light, which gives you immediate access. You can also use the program to read, replay and analyse the PGN games. If you have ChessBase, Fritz or any Fritz-compatible program (Rybka, Hiarcs, Shredder) you can automatically access the server. All these programs come with a one-year subscription to Playchess. Note that if you have a trial account you may not be able to watch the games if too many registered members are logged in.
