38th Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008

The Olympiad is taking place from November 12th to 25th, 2008, in the Congress Hall in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. 156 teams from 152 nations are participating, with most of the top players present.

Round six open's section

Russia defeated the English team 3:1, and Armenia beat Azerbaijan 2½:1½, so that now both these winning teams have 11/12 points and are in the lead. Behind them with 10/12 are seven teams: Germany 1, Ukraine, India, Israel, France, China and Romania. The upsets today were 14th seed Romania beating sixth seed Bulgaria (though Veselin Topalov won his game against Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu); Judit Polgar's loss to IM Alder Escobar Forero, rated 229 points below her; and Finnish GM Tomi Nyback, 2639, beating Magnus Carlsen, 2786 (Norway drew the match).

Note that we have changed the title from "Men's Section" to "Open Section", since the teams can and indeed occasionally do include women (Judit Polgar for Hungary, Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant for Scotland, Anya Corke for Hong Kong). Naturally no men are allowed to play in the "Women's Section", so that label remains unchanged.
