Olympiad R5: Six teams with 9/10 points

by ChessBase
11/18/2008 – Germany and Russia drew their match, Armenia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and England won theirs, so now there are six teams with an equal number of match points at the top of the table. The day's sensation: Adams lost with white against 16-year-old Fabiano Caruana. In the women's section China thrashed their main rival Poland to take the sole lead. Results, games, giant pictorial.

38th Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008

The Olympiad is taking place from November 12th to 25th, 2008, in the Congress Hall in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. 156 teams from 152 nations are participating, with most of the top players present.

Round five men's section

The summit between Germany 1 and Russia ended in four draws, with Vladimir Kramnik playing a Petroff against Arkadij Naiditsch, who had sensationally beaten him with a novelty in this opening in Dortmund earlier this year. Armenia defeated the Netherlands to join Germany and Russia in the lead, that has now swollen to six teams with 9/10 points. Ukraine is one of them, after Vassily Ivanchuk ground down Peter Leko in 127 moves and the team defeated Hungary 2½:1½. That was the score between England and Italy as well, but one must note that 16-year-old prodigy Fabiano Caruana, who beat Viktor Korchnoi yesterday, did it again with the black pieces against Michael Adams. Norway's dream trip ended when Azerbaijan took their match 3:1. Third seed China could only beat 46th seed Scotland 2½:1½, which must be regarded as a further upset in this round. Bulgaria defeated Slovenia 3½:½, with Veselin Topalov dropping the only half-point in his game against Alexander Beliavsky.

Mark Crowther, who compiles and edits games for the London Chess Centre's The Week in Chess service (and for the weekly downloads in ChessBase), had done a small amount of editing and correcting of the mens games from rounds 1-5. He cannot make use of the compiled PGN files for the individual rounds from the official site, he says, because he simply doesn't trust them. A number of games are misattributed, and in facth rounds 1-2 for the women actually have the men's games in them. The games above are taken from the live coverage and then processed into the normal TWIC format. Mark has tinkered with probably around 20 results and false game endings in the above files for round 1-5.

Live coverage on Playchess

A selection of 32 games will be broadcast live on our chess server Playchess.com. There will also be live video interviews with players after their games. If you are not a member of the Playchess community (which as of Monday, November 8th 2008 had 307,966 registered users) you can download the free PGN reader ChessBase Light, which gives you immediate access. You can also use the program to read, replay and analyse the PGN games. If you have ChessBase, Fritz or any Fritz-compatible program (Rybka, Hiarcs, Shredder) you can automatically access the server. All these programs come with a one-year subscription to Playchess. Note that if you have a trial account you may not be able to watch the games if too many registered members are logged in.
