11/24/2008 – Armenia beat Serbia 3:1, Ukraine took Israel down with a 2½:1½ win. Veselin Topalov ended his winning streak with a painful loss to Alexei Shirov (Spain beat Bulgaria 3:1). 38th Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008

The Olympiad is taking place from November 12th to 25th, 2008, in the Congress Hall in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. 156 teams from 152 nations are participating, with most of the top players present.

Round Ten Open Section

After his round nine loss Levon Aronian bounced back with a quick victory over Ivan Ivanisevic, and with a second victory by Vladimir Akopian Armenia beat Serbia 3:1. Ukraine took Israel down a peg when Zahar Efimenko beat Evgeny Postny, and England lost to China 1½:2½. Germany lost to the US, while Russia trounced Slovenia 3½:½. Spain beat Bulgaria 3:1, with Alexei Shirov and Francisco Vallejo defeating Veselin Topalov and Ivan Cheparinov respectively. The Netherlands beat Poland 2½:1½.

After the dust had settled Armenia was once again at the top of the table, but sharing match points, 17/20, with Ukraine. Israel, the leader after the previous round, was joint 3-4 with China, both having 16/20. Behind them top seed Russia, Netherlands, Spain and USA have 15/20.

Poland beat Armenia, Georgia beat China and USA beat Uzbekistan, in each case with 2½:1½; Russia beat Hungary, France Azerbaijan and India Slovenia with 3:1. The result: Poland is now in the sole lead, Ukraine, Georgia and Serbia follow a point behind; then come USA and Russia. The Chinese squad, which had lead for much of the Olympiad, at one stage with two points, in now in a group of six teams: China, Armenia, France, India, Romania and Netherlands.

Looking forward to the final round

The matches to watch are Armenia (17 points) vs China (16 points), Ukraine (17) vs USA (15), Israel (16) vs The Netherlands (15), and Russia (15) vs Spain (15). In the women's section Poland must draw Ukraine to win gold. The medals will be decided in this match-up and in Serbia vs Georgia, France vs USA and Russia vs The Netherlands.

Monday is a free day. The final round will be played from 10 a.m., with the first moves being executed by singer Sebastian Krumbiegel, FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumshinov, super model Carmen Klaas and football coach Ruud Kaiser. At 11:00 a.m. there will be a press conference with FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumshinov and mayor Winfried Lehmann.

The award ceremony and celebration will be held in the main hall of the Congress Center from 20–22 p.m. It will be followed by a Farewell Party with the band "Die Weiber".

Live coverage on Playchess

A selection of 32 games will be broadcast live on our chess server Playchess.com. There will also be live video interviews with players after their games. If you are not a member of the Playchess community (which as of Monday, November 8th 2008 had 307,966 registered users) you can download the free PGN reader ChessBase Light, which gives you immediate access. You can also use the program to read, replay and analyse the PGN games. If you have ChessBase, Fritz or any Fritz-compatible program (Rybka, Hiarcs, Shredder) you can automatically access the server. All these programs come with a one-year subscription to Playchess. Note that if you have a trial account you may not be able to watch the games if too many registered members are logged in.
