Chess Festival Cattolica

At the beginning of September (August 31st to September 8th, 2020) the Italian city Cattolica (province Rimini) organised the 7th Chess Festival Cattolica, offering three open Swiss tournaments. Organizer of the festival was the local chess club L'ASD Accademia Scacchistica "La Regina", the venue of the tournaments was the "Hotel Kursaal".

43 players started in the A-Open, including six Grandmasters, and the Swiss Grandmaster Noel Studer dominated the tournament from beginning to end. He started the tournament with seven wins and finished with two draws to come clear first with 8.0/9.

In round six Studer won a crucial – and fine – game against one of his main rivals, GM Alberto David.

In a previous game White played 14.bxc5. 0-0 15.bxc5 Bxc5 16.h3 Bd7 17.Ng3 The engines evaluate this position as roughly equal but it is easier to play for Black who has the pair bishops, more space and open files for his rooks. Rfe8 18.Bg5 Qc6 19.Qf3 Re6 20.Ngf5?! Better was 20.Rfe1 e.g. Rae8 21.Rxe6 Rxe6 22.Rb1 with a roughly equal position. 20...g6 21.Ng3 Rae8 22.Qd1 Bc8 23.Qd2 Bb7 24.f4? This seriously weakens White's position. The engines recommend 24.Bxf6 Rxf6 25.Ne4 Rxe4 26.dxe4 Qxe4 27.Qg5 Qe7 with a slight advantage for Black. 24...Re3 25.Kh2 Be7 26.Nf3 Qd6 27.Ne5? White cracks under pressure. Better was 27.Rae1 e.g. Qxa3 28.Rxe3 dxe3 29.Qxe3 and White is still in the game. 27...Rxg3! White resigned. After 28.Kxg3 Nh5+ 29.Kh2 Bxg5 30.fxg5 Qxe5+ White's position is hopeless. 0–1
