Fritz 13 is now available – let's check who needs it!

by ChessBase
10/13/2011 – “Success very often is the enemy of future success," Garry Kasparov warned us some months ago. Changing the world once is not enough, he said, we needed to do it again. Well, we are trying. Today we launch Fritz 13, which incorporates a tantalizing new feature: "Let's Check", which provides communal analysis in the cloud. You can order it now or download it for instant access.

Kasparov on progress in computing

In his greetings to the 25th Anniversary of ChessBase Garry Kasparov finished with an admonition: “Success very often is the enemy of future success. With all the work you have done, ChessBase has turned into some kind of Microsoft in the world of chess. So I wish ... that you will move on, by doing a great job, but creating something new and elevating chess computers, chess programs, the virtual world of chess to a new level. Changing the world once is not enough.”

We have taken this advice very seriously, and here are the results: a new version of our very strong Fritz 13 program with a revolutionary new function which, in our opinion, is set to change the world of chess a second time.

Fritz 13 with "Let's Check"

Let us give you a summary of what's coming your way. Fritz 13 has a lot of interesting improvements, listed at the bottom of this page. But the one new development that really stands out is a function called "Let's Check".

Essentially this is the ability to check whether anyone else has already analysed the position you are currently looking at. Say you have run across a very interesting idea in a complicated line. Normally you switch on your chess engine and wait for a bit – the longer, of course, the better – until it comes up with a hopefully reliable evaluation of the position.

How about the following: if someone else has already done exactly what you are doing, and is willing to share the results with other users, wouldn't it be nice to get his evaluation and main line, calculated to a great depth on a very powerful machine, instantly, with zero seconds delay? Well, that's exactly what Let's Check offers: profit from analysis that has already been done by others, contribute your own engine output to the "cloud".

To make it clear: opting into the Let's Check system does not mean you will get analysis by random chess players dumped on you – reams of variations no one is really interested in. It simply means that you will get certified engine analysis – the evaluation and main line – from powerful machines that have already worked on the position that is currently on the board. What you do with these results, which lines you follow or deepen, is left to you.

Naturally you can always opt out of the system, even temporarily, if you do not want to share your own engine results in an unexplored position. This will probably be of great importance to top GMs who are preparing for a tournament or match. Who would want the opponent to profit from his own work? Switching Let's Check on and off is just a single click of the mouse.

There is a lot more to be said about the new system, but we will save that for a series of instructional articles that we will publish in the near future. One last thing we would like to draw your attention to: Fritz 13 provides a "Live Book" which is the biggest and most comprehensive openings repertoire ever created. It resides in the "cloud" and you have instant access to it wherever you are. And it is constantly being updated, not on a week-by-week or even day-by-day basis, but second-by-second. You can watch that happen when you are following a live broadcast on Playchess: the moves of the players go into the Live Book the instant they are played, and remain available to anybody, anywhere, at any time and on any hardware. All you need is an Internet connection.

Fritz 13 – The Truly Great Chess Program

Package text

Join the community! “Let’s Check” is a revolutionary new feature of Fritz 13 that will change the chess world. With it Fritz 13 users can join a world-wide community that will put together a giant knowledge base for chess. Whenever you analyse a position to any meaningful depth with your chess engine Fritz 13 will, if you allow it, send the main line and evaluation to a central server, to be shared by all participating users. Soon you will be able to find deep analysis to almost every position you look at – instantly, pre-generated by the finest engines in the world, running on the most powerful machines around. Gone are the days where you would have to wait for your computer to reach substantial depth in order to make sure you are not falling into a trap. You will even be able to see the analysis of different chess engines and compare their results – all without a second of wait time.

“Discover” a position! It does not matter whether you are a beginner, a club player or a Super-GM. If you use a powerful engine to analyse a hitherto unknown position with the Let’s Check function switched on, you will be automatically registered as the “discoverer” of that position. The system keeps lists of all the great discoverers of chess positions!

“Conquer” chess positions! Let’s Check keeps updating the evaluations to any given position with newer, deeper analysis as this becomes available. Using powerful machines and the latest engines allows you to “conquer” positions, with your name attached to the newest, deepest analysis. You can also add comments to your analysis, which other users will see when they encounter the position.

Even if you are not a great openings expert you can become one using Let’s Check. The entire body of modern openings theory is built into the system, and Let’s Check provides you instantly with the latest statistics of any position in the opening: how often did it occur, which moves were played, with what success. The openings book is updated on a weekly basis and will show you which variations are currently topical and how good they are. It will also reveal which lines are being analysed and debated in the international community, and with what conclusions.

Using Let’s Check while watching top games live on the Playchess server becomes an experience in itself. Not only do you have the latest openings and statistics at your disposal, you can also see the results of the most powerful computers and engines that are logged into the server – total information on any computer, in the blink of an eye.

Other features of Fritz 13: improved and enhanced database management, improved user interface in Windows Office 2010 standard, new and more powerful Fritz 13 engine, especially tuned for deep analysis.

Naturally Fritz 13 continues to offer chess players everything they need to study and train: professional board graphics, engine management, adjustable playing strength, coach functions, move explanation, automatic game analysis and commentary, training modules for openings, tactics and endgames, professional printing of games and diagrams, a database of 1.5 million games, five hours of private video instructions by grandmasters.

And the icing on the cake: six months of free premium membership to the world’s largest chess server: Playchess.com.
