It was an onslaught of a different kind – something that world chess champion Viswanathan Anand must not be very accustomed to. The reception that the 37-year-old got in the wee hours on Monday would have been completely unexpected. It was a chaotic crowd which received him at the airport – he was pushed and shoved at the Indira Gandhi International Airport where he arrived, after winning his second world crown late last month. In this melee, Anand looked dazed, but still managed to flash a smile. Later, instead of complaining about the chaos, he graciously said that he was touched by getting "mobbed at midnight".

Unruly scenes were witnessed at the airport when chess world champion Vishwanathan Anand arrived in India after winning the crown. The organisers failed to control the situation as a result of which the champion had to unceremoniously make his way out from the airport amidst chaotic scenes. The waiting posse of photographers and cameramen almost climbed over each other to get a shot of the champion, which didn't amuse Anand, who quickly made his exit. There was a lot of hackling, shoving and pushing and even Anand was not spared as the organisers as well as the Delhi Chess Association officials tried to get photographed with him.

World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand on Monday said he was "touched" by the enthusiasm shown by his fans who received him at the airport on his first home coming a fortnight after winning the crown in Mexico. The World Champion had no complains at all about the unruly scenes even as the organisers failed to control the situation. "I was touched by seeing the boisterous crowd. It felt very special that everyone came to airport for me at one a.m.," Anand told PTI later in the day.

Not having got a chance to speak to the waiting media at the airport, Anand graciously accommodated requests for quick ‘bytes’ from the news channels at the hotel and finally retired to bed at 3 a.m.

On Monday evening, President Pratibha Patil gave an audience to Anand and Aruna. “It is thrilling every time to walk into Rashtrapati Bhawan,” Anand said about the visit. The President was very gracious. She seemed to have followed the event (World championship) closely. But she was curious to know how many hours we play, how we prepare for the games and study our opponents. I said we study the body language of our opponents, what he did play or did not play in the past and things like that. It was nice to be asked so many questions by the President,” said Anand before getting prepared for the last two engagements of the day. Anand is scheduled to address a press conference on Tuesday.
