An unknown player with the Playchess handle Vvarkey won the first round of the PAL/CSS Freestyle tournament. He did it with 7.5 points from 8 games (before the last round his score was 7/7).
Behind Vvarkey were six players with six points each. So all seven automatically qualified for the final round, which will be played out on April 8th and 9th, 2006. Amongst the qualified programs is Hydra, the multi-processor hardware system developed in the United Arab Emirates. Its handle is Zor_Champ. Rajlich,Rybka, which is the Rybka program run by its author Vas Rajlich, qualified, as did Correspondence Chess GM Arno Nickel, playing under the name Ciron.
Since eight players will play in the finals the eighth place has to be decided in a tiebreak, which will be played on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at 16:00h CET. Ten players, who all scored 5.5/8, are eligible for this knockout event. They are listed from 8–17 in the table given below.
The PAL/CSS Freestyle Tournament carries a prize fund of US $16,000. In the main tournament there were 148 players from over 30 countries. The event lasted eight hours, with 532 games played. Most were of a very high quality, since in Freestyle events the use of computers is explicitly allowed.

The tie-break will be played on Saturday, March 25, 2006, at 16:00h CET. It will be staged as a knockout tournament. Those players with the best Buchholz rating from the main tournament will possibly get a bye in the first round. Each pairing plays a mini match of two games (time control 15 + 5). In case of a tie two blitz games will follow (5 + 5). If this also results in a tie a last blitz game will be played (White gets 6 minutes against 5, but must win).
Important note: all participants must be present in the tournament room 15 minutes before the start of round 1.
