9/6/2008 – Two Chinese girls, Hou and Shen, one Russian, one Ukrainian, an Armenian, Bulgarian, Swede and an Indian remain in the Women's World Championship in Nalchik. Both the high-rated Konsintseva sisters were eliminated in round three, the reigning junior world champion Harika is out as well, so is Svetlana Matveeva, who eliminated World Champion Xu Yuhua in round two. The Women's World Championship 2008 is taking place from August 28th to September 18th in Nalchik, in the Kabardino-Balkaria region of Russia. 64 players were eligible to play in the knock-out event, which has a prize fund of US $450,000. Due to the tensions in the region the Georgian players and a few others decided not to participate.

Svetlana Matveeva lost her second game to Anna Ushenina and was eliminated


After winning five games in a row Hou Yifan lost this game against Elena Sedina, but went on to beat the Italian IM in both rapid chess tiebreak games.


Two successful ladies: Lilit Mkrtchian of Armenia, who beat Junior World Champion Harika Dronavalli 1.5:0.5; and GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, who won her second game against Tatiana Kosintseva with the black pieces to go through to the next round.
