Linex and Monte-Carlo are European Team Champions

The 23rd European Club Cup for Men and the 12th European Club Cup for Women took place from October 2nd to 10th in Kemer, Antalya, Turkey. There were 56 teams participating in the men's section and 18 teams in the women's.

Report after round seven (final)

The winner in the men's section was Linex Magic Merida, which won six of seven matches, drawing just one and thus scoring 13 match points. The team chalked up a total of 28.5 board points. Ural Sverdlovskaya scored 31 board points but won only five matches, drawing two (= 12 points), and so took second place. Two teams followed with 11 match points each: Tomsk-400 and OSC Baden-Baden.

In the women's section Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo came first with 11 match points and 20 board points, ahead of AVS Krasnoturinsk with the same number of match points but 19 board points. Three teams follow with ten match points each.

Individual performances

The individual performances of the players saw Rafael Vaganian scoring 4.5/5 with a sterling 2904 performance, followed by the extraordinary Alexei Shirov, who played seven games, scored six points and performed like a 2875 player. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov drew his final game to drop from a 2900+ performance to 2848, the third best in the tournament. In addition Ivan Cheparinov, Pavel Eljanov, Sergei Rublevsky, Peter Svidler and Krishnan Sasikiran all performed above the 2800 level. In the following list we have included all players who took part in at least five games and scored higher than 2600.

Women's section

The highest performer by a long margin in the women's section is Koneru Humpy, who scored 5.5 points in six games on board one with an Elo performance of 2800! Anyone doubt that we will soon have two Indian world champions in chess (after all, not too long ago it was two Bulgarians). Behind Humpy we have IM Nana Dzagnidze with a 5/6 on board three and a 2638 performance, GM Xu Yuhua with 4/6 on board one and a 2591 performance, GM Kateryna Lahno with 4.5/7 on board one and 2556, and 13-year-old WGM Hou Yifan with 5/7 on board two and 2547.
