2/26/2004 – Maybe they put something into the water? Just when everybody was getting used to the daily serving of lifeless draws, had the jokes about the lack of fighting spirit had been honed to stand-up class, the players suddenly burst into action and presented the world with three decided games in this round. Linares Round 7

The three winners in this round were Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko. Kasparov methodically outplayed Spanish champion Francisco Vallejo, actually reaching a forced mate in the final position. Vladimir Kramnik had something good prepared against Veselin Topalov, who as so often in his career went for an all-to-daring continuation. And finally Peter Leko did not let this one get away, even though Alexei Shirov put up a heroic defence.

After seven rounds the odd number of players at last permits a proper cross table – the last we will see until the end of the tournament:

Pictures from round seven

At move 31 Leko is a pawn up, Shirov is pinning his hopes on an advanced d-pawn

Defending with great resourcefulness and determination, but in vain. A super-technician like Peter Leko needs just a pawn to win a game.
