Kusadasi: sensations in the women's section

by ChessBase
4/8/2006 – After four rounds of the European Individual Championships we have three players, Jobava, Dgebuandze and Anastasian, in the lead, with 22 following them. In the women's section a lot of 2400+ players are languishing in the bottom half of the table, while the remarkable Muzychuk sisters are stealing the show. As promised here's a big photo report from the women's section.

7th European Individual Championships

The Seventh European Individual Chess Championships are taking place from April 4th to 17th in Kuşadası, Turkey. There are 85 GMs, 37 IMs and 6 FMs from 36 countries in the Men Individual Chess Championship, and 2 GMs, 20 IMs, 1 FM, 27 WGMs, 22 WIMs and 10 WFMs from 27 countries in the Women Individual Chess Championship. The total prize fund, including amateur and professionals categories, is €78.000. A total of 16 players from the men's section and 12 from the women's will qualify for the next cycle of the FIDE World Cup. The players are staying in the five-star Korumar Hotel, located on one of the best beaches of Kuşadası. It is also the venue of the tournament. Turkey is organizing the EICC for the third time in seven years.

The event is being covered on the web site of the Turkish Chess Federation, which has all the basic information. The special tournament web site is currently being redesigned and converted from Flash to HTML (many thanks to the organisers for this). You can reach it here. Games are still delayed by one round, since they are being manually processed.

TCF President and chief organiser Ali Nihat Yazici (right) with ECU President Boris Kutin

Ali Nihat Yazici, the President of the Turkish Chess Federation (which has 128,000 members!), provided some information on the cost of the event: "We will lose probably around 40.000 € by organising this tournament, because of the prize fund, because of organisational costs, because of the high quality of conditions provided. We have some sponsors of course, but the negative result of the tournament is worked out after calculating the contribution of sponsors. Do we mind? Never! For us it is indeed a profit. If the tournament had been organised abroad, we would not have been able to afford to send the same number of Turkish players to the European Championships. The money is invested in Turkish Hotels, in airline companies, and will go to our eminent friends and chess players, from different countries, participating in the tournament."

Standings in the Men's section after four rounds

After the first three rounds in the men's section Dutch GM Erwin L'Ami was leading with a 3.0/3.0 score. However after losing his round four game Erwin was overtaken by the trio of Jobava, Dgebuandze and Anastasian, who now lead the field with 3½ points. Top seed Vassily Ivanchuk is in the second group with 3.0 points, where we also find Kiril Georgiev, Arkadij Naiditsch, Suat Atalik, Giorgi Kacheishvili and Zdenko Kozul.
