He was the Olympic Champion in 1984 and a few times medal winner in the Soviet Championship, the World's strongest tournament. Of his many attempts to become Soviet champion, he came very close on three occasions: Riga in 1970, Baku 1972 and Moscow 1983, where he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with chess legends like Korchnoi, Tal and Karpov respectively. His crowning moment came in 1970 when he won the national Championship of Ukraine.
Vladimir Tukmakov led the USSR to consecutive wins of the World Student Team Championship from 1966 to 1972, winning nine gold medals along the way. The World Team Championship of 1993 saw him lead the Ukrainian team to a resounding silver medal triumph, showcasing his strategic genius on the global stage.
Yet, it is in the realm of chess coaching that Tukmakov truly shines. Under his coaching, the Ukrainian team achieved Olympic glory in 2004 and 2010, etching their names in chess history. His coaching prowess also yielded numerous medals in European and World Team Championships, solidifying his reputation as a master strategist. Recognized by FIDE as the Best Trainer of 2010, Tukmakov's influence extends far beyond the chessboard. His mentorship has shaped the careers of chess luminaries such as Anatoly Karpov, Victor Korchnoi, and Anish Giri. Tukmakov is also an author of several chess bestsellers, his insightful writings continue to inspire generations of chess enthusiasts worldwide.
