Kübra Öztürk wins Turkish Women's Championship

2/4/2012 – There were two dominating female players in this event: Kübra, 20, rated 2309, and the eight times Turkish Women's Champion, Betul Yildiz, 22, rated 2340. The two, who are at least 350 rating points ahead of the others, finished tied for first, 1.5 points ahead of the field. In the playoff it was the younger player who won the Armageddon tiebreak game. Turkish Chess Championships 2012

The Turkish Chess Championships for men and women started on January 29th, 2012 in Kemer (Antalya), Turkey. The tournament is a ten round Swiss and will last until Sunday, February 5th.

Kubra Ozturk Turkish Women's Champion

In the ninth round the leaders of the tournament Kubra Ozturk and Betul Yildiz both won their games and had to play tie-break match in order to determine the winner. Betul Yildiz, who is eight-time Turkish Champion, won the first game of the playoff, in which both players had ten minutes for the whole game and five seconds increment per move. In the second game her teammate Kubra Ozturk managed to equalize a score. The fate of the first place was decided in Armageddon: Kubra Ozturk managed to win the game and title. Busra Arig took the bronze medal.

Turkish Championship for men

The Turkish Championship for men will last until Sunday. With one round to go Dragan Solak, Firat Burak, Mert Erdogdu, Ege Koksal are leading with 7½ points out of 9. The group of 14 players following them is half a point behind. We will report on the final results when the tournament is over.
