Judit Polgar and Henrique Mecking to play in Brazil

On March 1st and 2nd the untiring Judit Polgar, relentless in her efforts to promote the royal game, will be playing in an invitational rapid tournament in Brazil, in Caxias do Sul in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Aside from Judit Polgar, there will also be Brazilian legend Henrique Mecking, once third in the world, seven-time Brazilian champion Gilberto Milos, and Uruguayan GM Andres Rodriquez.

Four players, and all legends in their own way. Judit Polgar, greatest female player
of all time, and only woman in top ten ever; Henrique Mecking, two-time winner of
Interzonals and world number three; Gilberto Milos, seven-time Brazilian champion,
and Andrés Rodríguez, the greatest Uruguayan player in its history.

Despite the undeniable attractiveness of this event, to think this is the sum of it, would be to miss out on all this festival has to offer.

The organizers are obviously making the most of the presence of the greatest female player ever, as is Judit Polgar herself. Judit will also be launching in Portuguese her newest book “Chess Playground” with a book signing for her fans. She will also be giving a lecture, followed by an exclusive 35-player simul, for which inscriptions may be made at the official site. Participants in the simul are granted automatic participation to the lecture.

To promote all aspects of the game, GM Andrés Rodríguez will be providing a four-hour beginner’s course while there will also be a two part-course to train chess instructors. Finally, there will be an art exhibition by local artist Dóris Giacomelli.

None of this would be complete without the time-honored chess tournament open to all, and sure enough there is a nine-round rapid open on March 3rd and 4th with a US$3000 (roughly) first prize that is part of the local “Festa da Uva” (NdT: Grape Celebration). The time controls are increasingly deep, with the first two rounds played at 16 minutes KO, then rounds three and four are played at 30 minutes per player, and finally rounds five through nine are at 61 minutes per player. Bear in mind that draw are not permitted in the final two rounds for the top fifty boards, and in the event of one, the players will decide the result with an Armageddon blitz with six minutes for white, and five for black with the benefit of the draw.

For those wishing to participate in the action, consult the folder, and see the official website for more information.
