IV International Chess Festival Eforie Nord

by ChessBase
7/1/2012 – The IV Chess Festival of Eforie Nord took place and enjoyed the participation of players such as GM Sergey Tiviakov, GM Viorel Iordachescu, GM Bela Badea, and WGM Adriana Nikolova. Sadly, due to an outright interdiction by the Romanian Federation and clubs, only eleven players showed up. Not giving up, the organizer formed a round-robin and still honored his prizes! Illustrated report.

IV International Chess Festival Eforie Nord

The fourth International Chess Festival of Eforie Nord took place from June 23rd to July 1st enjoying the participation of players such as grandmaster globetrotter Sergey Tiviakov, Romanian GM Viorel Iordachescu, GM Bela Badea, and WGM Adriana Nikolova. It was held at roughly the same time as the Trofeul Litoralului, also held in Eforie area, a well-known beach resort in Romania.

Eforie Nord is a famous beach resort on the Black Sea

In spite of offering over triple the first prize and purse for the top spots, for example, US$2850 for first as opposed to US$850, and so on, the event saw a field of... eleven turn up, compared to well over hundred in the other. Why such a disparity despite a deeper prize fund, and a promise of category prizes? The reason is the organizer, Dan Pasarelu is a persona non-grata to the federation, and the federation, together with clubs, sought to forbid players from participating. It is a wonder the tournament wasn't a smash hit, since in many countries such an attitude would actually have an inverse reaction.

The tournament took place in the Petrolul hotel

Still, in spite of the disappointing turnout, the organizer kept his promise and instead joined the eleven players into a round-robin, creating an albiet very unusual range of Elo, from 2656 to... 1201, but all the place prizes were paid out as promised.

Not to be defeated, the organizer Dan Pasarelu took the eleven players and made a
round-robin paying out the place prizes as advertised!

None of this would have been possible without the fantastic support of the mayor of
Eforie, Ioan Ovidiu Brailoiu, who has made the event possible these last six years.

The arbiter and his daughter Andra Cimpean (1679 Elo) who
came in 10th and took home 500 Lei (US$142).

As to the conditions, Eforie Nord is a beautiful place on the Black Sea, with sparkling clean water to bathe in, a lovely village, and best of all: extremely low prices everywhere!

With a calm sea, and clear water, the area booms during the summer
