Istanbul Besiktas and Istanbul Teknik lead in Turkish Is Bank League

by ChessBase
7/17/2012 – It is not always the big guns who dominate a league. The team like Istanbul ISEK, which has Adams, Polgar and Kazimdzhanov on the top boards, have scored just one win vs six losses. This is because each ten-board team has four reserved for juniors and females. Two Istanbul teams, with Mamedyarov and Bologan on top boards and strong juniors below, lead after seven rounds.

The Turkish Is Bank Chess League has started in Konya Rixos Hotel (Turkey) and will continue from July 10th till July 22nd, 2012. This year, near 300 players from 14 clubs are participating in this event. The Turkish Team Championship (1st Chess League) was inaugurated in 1995. In 2004, it changed its name to Super League, but after the Turkish Isbank assumed sponsorship in 2006, the name was changed once more to the Turkish Isbank Chess League.

Report after round seven

After seven rounds of play the team Istanbul Besiktas, Jimnastik Kulübü, which fields GMs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Dragan Solak, Rauf Mamedov and WGM Mariya Muzychuk is in the lead, having won all their matches and collected 49 board points. They are closely followed by Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi Spor Kulübü, which has won six matches and drawn one, collecting 45.5 board points. They have four GMs: Viktor Bologan, Ernesto Inarkiev, Mustafa Yilmaz and Alexander Ipatov.

However it is not a battle of strong GMs, since there are mandatory females and youngster playing on each ten-board team. They have six boards reserved for titled players, followed by a female junior (U-20), a junior player (U-20), U15 girl, U 15 general tables. An unusual and interesting format of which we heartly approve.

This means that for instance a team like Istanbul ISEK Aquamatch, which has Michael Adams, Judit Polgar and Rustam Kazimdzhanov on the top boards, can have scored just one win vs six losses.
