Prague, October 5th, 2001: Grandmaster Garry Kasparov (rated 2828), the Worlds number one ranked chess player, has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the powerful Czech National Chess Team to a two day clock simultaneous match. Kasparov will play against four grandmasters: Sergej Movsesjan (2627), Zbynek Hrácek (2610), Tomá Oral (2540) and Vlastimil Babula (2566) all at the same time in the prestigious Ball Game Hall of the Prague Castle, October 18 and October 20.
The general partner of this unique event is the leading mobile operator in Czech Republic Eurotel Praha, spol. s r.o. Eurotel hosted the 1998 and 1999 matches between Garry Kasparov and Jan Timman and Alexei Shirov versus Judit Polgar.
The Opening Ceremony, October 17, will feature the drawing of lots which will determine whether Kasparov will start with the white or black pieces on board one for the first match day. If Kasparov draws white on board one, he will also have white on board three, and black on boards two and four. On the second match day the colors will be reversed. In this way, the Czech players will play with both the white and black pieces. The games will start at 2.00 PM on both playing days. Kasparov will play with a time limit of 3 hours for fifty moves, the Czech team members will have 2.5 hours for fifty moves. After fifty moves, both sides will get an additional 30 minutes to complete the games. The prize money is $40,000 for the winner/winning team.
All games will be displayed in real time on the internet at www.kasparov.cz. Following the EUROTEL KASPAROV TROPHY in Prague, Martina Smukova & Halina Sebestakova, supported by Mr. Bessel Kok, have organized a unique CHESS SIMULTANEOUS CHARITY.
The charity simul will feature the worlds best chess player of all times GARRY KASPAROV, who will challenge 30 selected chess players including sponsors as well as children treated in Brnos Oncology center. The event will raise 1.000.000 Czk (about US$ 25,600) for Foundation for Childrens oncology KRTEK in Brno.
Each of the participants has donated Czk 30,000.- to the NF KRTEK either personally or by sponsor support from various companies, amongst which are Eurotel, Czech Telecom, TelSource, TicketPro, Best Communication Group, Stillking films, Hewlett-Packard, Woodcote, JANSSEN-CILAG, Roche, Epic, Aurum and Media direction.
The event will take place on Sunday, 21st of October 2001 in Brno and will be opened by Sir LIBOR PESEK, director of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Among the players, alongside with the children from ODO, will be Vaclav Klaus Chair Deputy of the Czech Republic, Jiri Bartoska Director Karlovy Vary film festival, Otakar Motejl Ombudsman, Jiri Lendl father of tennis player Ivan Lendl, Tomas Smid Professional Tennis player and many others.
The Foundation for Childrens oncology KRTEK was established in 1999 to support the Childrens oncology department (ODO) in Brno. Its main goal is to constantly improve the quality of life for the patients at the Oncology center and their successful return back to everyday life. Money raised from this event will be used to reconstruct the dormitories for the childrens parents who are forced to stay up to several months at the Oncology department during the treatments of their children.
