GM Daniel King: Powerplay Show

Hello, my name is Daniel King, and I would like to invite you to join me on Thursday evening for my Powerplay show on Playchess.com. I'll be looking at how Caruana managed to put the ball in the back of the net in this endgame; Carlsen's use of his head in Romania; and how calculation is similar to taking a penalty. Strategy, tactics and ball control – that's the Powerplay show Thursday evening 7:00 p.m. UK time, eight p.m. Central European Time. Almost as exciting as the World Cup!

Power Play 12 – The Hedgehog

The Hedgehog is not just an opening, it is a system. A system that can be used against 1.c4, against 1.e4 and also 1.d4. Some players, such as the Swedish Grandmaster Ulf Andersson, appear to play very little else with black. Black’s pieces curl up behind a row of pawns on the third rank and invite White to attack – at which point they spring out from behind the barricades to give the aggressor a nasty shock. The Hedgehog can easily transform into a tiger... This is modern chess.

Karpov was one of the first great exponents of the counter-attacking Hedgehog, Kasparov was also a great devotee and Kramnik and Anand are also experienced users. This DVD not only gives you specific theoretical advice on the main Hedgehog lines, but also looks at general strategy for both sides. Whether you play with White or Black, this DVD will help your game. Throughout the DVD, specially selected positions will enable you to test your understanding of the subject. The Power Play series is suitable for anyone looking to improve their chess, but also provides ready-made lessons and exercises for a trainer. Video running time: 5 hours.

Power Play 13 - The squeeze

What is a squeeze? When you take control of a game, deprive your opponent of counterplay and slowly squeeze the life out of your opponent. The motto of the squeeze could be: “To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.” from The Art of War, Sun Tzu, Chinese general, born c. 500 BC This DVD will help you to recognise when a squeeze is possible and how to execute it.

Throughout the DVD, specially selected positions will enable you to test your understanding of the subject. The Power Play series is suitable for anyone looking to improve their chess, but also provides ready-made lessons and exercises for a trainer. Video running time: 5 hours.
