Fritz comes second, just behind Deep Fritz

by ChessBase
1/17/2003 – The Swedish Svenska schackdatorföreningen (SSDF, Chess Computer Association) has released its latest computer ranking list, based on over 90,000 games played by 250 computers. As usual (for about four years now) Fritz is at the top, with the multiprocessor version Deep Fritz 7 outstripping its single-processor sibling – on identical hardware. The level of play of the leader, by the way, is 2755.

Thoralf Karlsson reports:

During the eighties and early nineties several chess computers with the Swedish program Conchess, written by Ulf Rathsman in 6502 assembler, were tested and included in the Swedish Rating List. Until today Ulf Rathsman has been the only Swedish chess programmer represented in the list.

Today we are very pleased to include another chess program written by a Swedish programmer! The name of the programmer is Per-Ola Valfridsson and the program is Ruffian 1.0.1. For persons interested in computer chess, it has of course been hard to avoid hearing about this freeware program and it's successes.

SSDF has played with Ruffian 1.0.1 A1200 as a UCI-engine under the Shredder-interface. Ruffians own opening book has been used. After 346 tournament games it has got a rating of 2676! That's only 78 points behind the leading commercial program, and 65 points above the freeware program Crafty 18.12. Ruffians rating is roughly equal to those of Junior 7, Hiarcs 8 and Century 4.

So far we have only three meetings against opponents also using Athlon 1200. If it's a coincidence or not I can't say, but the result here has been clearly better than against programs using K6-2 450 MHz.

Shredder 6.0 Paderborn UCI A1200 has lost nine points. Chess Tiger 15.0 K6-2 450 MHz has 12 points less on this list. Deep Fritz 7.0 K6-2 has gained six points.

We have started to play with Shredder 7.0 on both Athlon 1200 MHz and K6-2 450 MHz.

Next rating list will appear in February or March.
