The Chess Olympiad in Budapest brought some notable changes to the new FIDE World Ranking in October 2024. The Indians dominated the open tournament and this is reflected in their ratings. Erigaisi gained 19 points and with a rating of 2797 he is now world number 3 behind Carlsen and Nakamura. However, this does not take into account Erigaisi's recent defeat to Ediz Gürel in the Bundesliga. Had Erigaisi won his game against Gürel, he would have passed the 2800 barrier. Instead, he lost the game and 8 rating points, dropping to fifth place in the live rankings.

Gukesh gained even more rating points in Budapest than Erigaisi, and it is very rare that a top ten player manages to gain 30 points in a single month. But with his result in at the Olympiad Gukesh climbed to fifth place in the FIDE list, and after Erigaisi's defeat in the Bundesliga, Gukesh is even the world's number four on the live ranking list.

At the end of November, Gukesh will play against Ding Liren for the World Championship, but the World Champion was unable to overcome his ongoing poor form at the Chess Olympiad - he lost 8 Elo points is currently ranked 21st.

With a plus of 17 points, Nodirbek Abdusattorov is also among the big winners among the top players. The Uzbek has stabilised his sixth place and increased the gap to seventh place – Alireza Firouzja did not play in Budapest.

Magnus Carlsen, of course, is and remains the best player in the world. At the Chess Olympiad, the Norwegian scored 6.0/8, which cost him 1 rating point though he did win the bronze medal for the third best individual result on first board.

Top 100 Women

The impact of the results of the Chess Olympiad on the women's world rankings is far less dramatic than for the men, because the best women in the world did not play in Budapest. The top players from China were absent because the Chinese team was made up of young players. The Russian Chess Federation is still suspended due to the country's invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine played without Anna and Maria Muzychuk. So only one player from the top ten took part, Nana Dzagnidze, who gained a few Elo points but is still the world's number nine.

India also won the Women's Olympiad and it was the young player Divya Deshmuk who stood out in this team. She gained 18 points and improved to 11th place. Zhu Jiner from China gained 12 points with her good result in Budapest and improved to 12th place.

Top 100 Juniors

Gukesh and Abdusattorov top the junior list and there is now a gap between them and third placed Praggnanandhaa, who lost a few points at the Chess Olympiad. Vincent Keymer has maintained his fourth place on the list of the world's best juniors and is the fourth junior with a rating above 2700. Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov, in fifth place, has over 30 points less than Keymer.

Top 100 Female Juniors

The world's best female juniors almost all improved their ratings at the Chess Olympiad. Divya Deshmukh tops the list, followed by Bibissara Assaubayeva from Kazakhstan. The 14-year-old Chinese player Lu Miaoyi is in third place, having moved up one position. In the list of junior players, there are often large jumps in both directions, and this time is no exception. The most impressive leap, in a positive sense, was made by Machthild van Foreest, who gained nearly 80 points with her performance in the Dutch women's team.
