11/2/2026 – The US Chess Championships and the European Club Cup were the most important tournaments of the past month, bringing about a number of changes in the rankings of the world's top players. Magnus Carlsen, Hou Yifan, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and Alice Lee top the rankings in their respective categories. Meanwhile, Nihal Sarin entered the world top 20 and Hans Niemann dropped below the 2700 mark.

The strongest tournament held in October was the US Chess Championship, which brought about a number of changes in the ratings of the leading American players. However, newly crowned US champion Wesley So made only a marginal gain of 1 Elo point, leaving him in sixth place in the world rankings. Runner-up Fabiano Caruana lost a single Elo point, also without affecting his position as world number three. Ahead of Caruana are only Magnus Carlsen, who does not play frequently, and Hikaru Nakamura, who hardly plays classical chess at all lately.

Levon Aronian emerged from the US Championship with a small loss of 6 rating points. Hans Niemann (minus 20 points) and Sam Sevian (minus 24 points) suffered more substantial setbacks. Both players have dropped out of the group of grandmasters rated above 2700. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Xiong (plus 15 points) and Grigoriy Oparin (plus 18 points) improved their ratings.

The other major tournament held last month was the European Club Cup. Nihal Sarin gained 11 rating points, climbing to 19th place in the world rankings. Nihal was also part of the particularly strong generation of young Indian talents. Unlike Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh Dommaraju, however, he attracted less attention from organisers of invitational tournaments and had to make his way through open events. Now, at the age of 22, he has finally broken into the world's top 20.

Matthias Bluebaum was another player who gained rating points at the European Club Cup. He added 5 points to his tally and climbed one place to 46th in the world rankings. Bluebaum is Germany's number two behind Vincent Keymer, who swapped places with Wei Yi and now occupies ninth place in the world rankings.

Top 100 Women

Rachael Li caused a major upset at the US Women's Championship, claiming the title ahead of favourites Alice Lee and Carissa Yip. Her victory also earned her 50 rating points. The 16-year-old thus climbed from 66th to 31st place in the women's world rankings. Runner-up Alice Lee also gained a few points and moved up to 14th place. Fellow favourite Carissa Yip, meanwhile, lost 31 points and dropped to 22nd place.

Other players who made substantial rating gains included Leya Garifullina (plus 19), Eline Roebers (plus 28) and England's young prodigy Bodhana Sivanandan (plus 31). The biggest gain was recorded by Bulgaria's Beloslava Krasteva, who added 61 points to her rating.

Hou Yifan, Zhu Jiner, Ju Wenjun and Lei Tingjie occupy the top four places in the women's world rankings. Aleksandra Goryachkina managed to break up the Chinese contingent at the top, overtaking Tan Zhongyi to move into fifth place. None of the Chinese players were active during the month.

Germany's highest-ranked female player, Elisabeth Paehtz, gained 9 rating points at the Women's European Club Cup and climbed two places in the rankings.

Top 100 Juniors

Most of the world's top juniors were active last month, and many, though not all, improved their ratings thanks to good results. World junior number one Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus was not at his best at the European Club Cup and lost 12 Elo points. The gap between him and Gukesh, who is preparing for his World Championship match, has narrowed, but Erdogmus retains his top spot.

Among the biggest rating gainers in the leading group were Marc'Andria Maurizzi (plus 17 points), Andy Woodward (plus 16 points) and Vaclav Finek (plus 22 points).

Top 100 Female Juniors

The world rankings for junior girls tend to see the biggest Elo swings each month - in both directions. Rachael Li's remarkable 50-point gain has already been mentioned. The American now occupies fifth place in the world's top 100 junior girls' rankings. Eline Roebers climbed to sixth place after gaining 28 rating points.

Alice Lee slightly extended her lead over Ukraine's Anastasiia Hnatyshyn, while 11-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan, with a rating of 2414 (plus 31 points), has already reached sixth place among the world's top junior girls. She is currently breaking all sorts of records - youngest WGM, youngest female IM, and so on - and it seems only a matter of time before she tops the girls' under-20 world rankings.

The biggest gain was recorded by Georgia's Kesaria Mgeladze, who earned 83 rating points at the newly established World Under-17 Championship and climbed from 67th to 30th place. India's Modipalli Deekshitha, meanwhile, lost 87 points and dropped from fifth place in the junior girls' world rankings.
