10/1/2026 – The results of the Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan brought notable changes to the rankings. Among the big winners are Uzbekistan's Abdusattorov, Sindarov and Yakubboev. Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus has extended his lead over Gukesh in the junior rankings, while Alice Lee of the United States is now the top-ranked female junior.

The Chess Olympiad provides a good picture of the current strength of the players taking part, though it is, of course, only a snapshot. Some players are in top form, others are not. And players cannot always aim for the best possible individual result, as the team result comes first. Some games were lost because a player had to push a drawn position for a win and took too many risks. In other cases, a good position was agreed drawn because that secured the desired team result.

Most countries fielded their best players at the Olympiad, and the results in Samarkand brought changes at the top of the FIDE rankings. However, not all top players travelled to Samarkand. Neither Carlsen nor Hikaru Nakamura played, and Nakamura has more or less put his professional career on hold. Alireza Firouzja's relationship with the French federation also seems to be over for the time being.

These three top players — numbers one, two and ten in the world — watched the Olympiad from afar, if they watched it at all. So there was no movement for Carlsen, Nakamura or Firouzja, but plenty for many others.

Uzbekistan's success is reflected in the rankings. Javokhir Sindarov, in fourth place, has closed the gap to Fabiano Caruana to just two points. The current World Championship challenger gained four points, while the 2018 runner-up lost five.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov gained 18 points and is now fifth, just behind Sindarov. Wesley So lost a few points in sixth place, while Praggnanandhaa gained a few in seventh. Vincent Keymer lost only three rating points with his result on top board for bronze medallists Germany, but still dropped two places as Abdusattorov and Praggnanandhaa overtook the German number one.

Wei Yi climbed from 12th to ninth, while Arjun Erigaisi dropped out of the top ten after losing 13 rating points. Erigaisi suffered an unfortunate first-round defeat against the little-known Thai player Laohawirapap Prin and then drew most of his subsequent games. But when it mattered, he beat Peter Leko in the final round.

Alongside Abdusattorov, one of the biggest rating gainers in the top 100 was his teammate Nodirbek Yakubboev (+27), who has now joined the 2700 club. Sixteen-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, the world's strongest junior, was already there and jumped to 17th place after gaining 15 points in Samarkand.

Top 100 Women

A number of top players were missing from the Women's Olympiad. This was mainly because China sent only one of its very best players, Zhu Jiner, to Samarkand. The Chinese still won gold with what was effectively their second team, while Zhu Jiner moved up to second place behind Hou Yifan. Five Chinese players continue to occupy the top five places in the world rankings.

Ukraine also competed without its best players. Anna Muzychuk remains eighth without having played a game. The three Russians in the top ten — Aleksandra Goryachkina, Kateryna Lagno and Polina Shuvalova — did not play either, as the Russian federation remains suspended over Russia's war against Ukraine.

Among the very top players, the best results apart from Zhu Jiner came from India's Humpy Koneru (+9), Americans Carissa Yip (+16) and Alice Lee (+14), and especially Armenia's Mariam Mkrtchyan (+47). Eleven-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan (+28) also had an outstanding result.

Top 100 Juniors

World Champion Gukesh was back in form in Samarkand and helped India win silver. However, the rating gap to Erdogmus widened, as the Turkish player, four years younger than Gukesh, was in even better form.

The next three players in the junior rankings, Pranav V, Pranesh M and Volodar Murzin, did not play in Samarkand. Almost all the young players behind them gained rating points, including Belarusian Denis Lazavik. Unlike Russia, Belarus was allowed to compete at the Olympiad.

Top 100 Female Juniors

Alice Lee's strong result took her past Ukraine's Anastasiia Hnatyshyn to the top of the girls' junior rankings. Savitha Shri B and Eline Roebers also moved up, as did sixteen-year-old Lu Miaoyi from China, who gained 29 rating points.

The biggest leap, however, came from France's Emilie Negre — not at the Olympiad, but at the World U16 Girls Championship and several tournaments in France. She gained more than 100 rating points and climbed over 40 places.
