FIDE ratings - July 2026

by André Schulz
7/1/2026 – Magnus Carlsen may have lost a significant number of rating points at Norway Chess, but he remains the undisputed world number one. World Champion Gukesh continues to lead the junior rankings, though only by a narrow margin. In the girls' rankings, Anastasiia Hnatyshyn is the new number one.

YOUR PERSONAL CHESS COACH - Whether you’re taking your first steps into the world of club chess, or already playing at a tournament level: with FRITZ, you can train more efficiently, intelligently and with a more personalised approach than ever before.
FRITZ is more than just a chess engine – it’s a training revolution! Whether you’re taking your first steps into the world of club chess, or already playing at a tournament level: with FRITZ, you can train more efficiently, intelligently and with a more personalised approach than ever before.

The Norway Chess tournament, held in Oslo in late May and early June, was the main reason for a certain amount of movement in the ratings of the absolute world elite. World number one Magnus Carlsen played many interesting and exciting games, but this year they did not bring him the results he is used to. In the end, the tournament cost the Norwegian 18 rating points. His lead over the other top players shrank to 31 points — still a considerable margin.

There were no changes in the places behind Carlsen. Self-declared chess retiree Hikaru Nakamura remains in second place. Fabiano Caruana, Javokhir Sindarov and Vincent Keymer follow in the next places, all without any change to their ratings. While Nakamura, Caruana and Sindarov did not play in June, Keymer confirmed his rating, even though he lost all his Armageddon games in Oslo. For rating purposes, however, that had no consequences. Keymer swapped places with Nodirbek Abdusattorov. The Uzbek was not at his best on home soil at the UzChess Cup and lost 11 points.

Among the winners in Oslo was Wesley So, who gained 11 points and climbed two places in the rating list. Tournament winner Praggnanandhaa gained 15 points and moved up five places. His compatriot Gukesh, by contrast, did not have a good result. The reigning world champion lost almost 15 points and dropped to 26th place in the world rankings.

Top 100 Women

There were no changes at the top of the women's world rankings, where the Chinese quartet of Hou Yifan, Lei Tingjie, Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun and Zhu Jiner continue to occupy the first four places. Bibissara Assaubayeva, winner of Norway Chess Women, gained 11 rating points and is now the best of the rest in fifth place. Anna Muzychuk also added a few points in Oslo and has climbed to seventh place. Behind Aleksandra Goryachkina, she is now the highest-rated player representing the European Chess Union.

Top 100 Juniors

World Champion Gukesh remains the highest-rated junior in the world, although the Indian's lead over the player in second place has shrunk to just four points after his poor result at Norway Chess in Oslo. Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, whose rating remained unchanged, is still second and the only other junior rated above 2700. He will move to the top of the list at the latest when Gukesh soon ceases to count as a junior for age reasons. Erdogmus is only 15 years old and could then lead the junior rankings for several years.

Top 100 Girls

There is a new number one in the girls' world rankings. Anastasiia Hnatyshyn's sensational victory at the European Women's Championship earned her an astonishing 214 rating points. The Ukrainian thus rocketed from 39th place to the top of the girls' world rankings. Former leader Anna Shukhman, by contrast, lost 13 points at the Asian Women's Championship, but still holds on to second place. Uzbekistan's Afruza Khamdamova gained 13 points and moved to within just three points of Shukhman.

Apart from Hnatyshyn, Nilufarkhon Imomkuzieva of Uzbekistan recorded the second-biggest rating gain of the month. She added 96 points and climbed from 48th to 17th place in the girls' world rankings.
