2/21/2021 – After two days of qualifying round-robin tournaments, eight teams moved on to the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Corporate Championship. Most of the elite players were eliminated, as more balanced squads outscored them in their pools — except for Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anton Korobov and Georg Meier, whose teams are still in contention.
2/19/2021 – The FIDE World Corporate Championship will take place online on February 19-21. It will be a team tournament in which companies will present a roster made up of employees and at the most one invited player. Giants like Amazon, Samsung, Ford, Microsoft and Gazprom have registered to participate, with some of them inviting elite grandmasters to join their teams — among them, Kindred (Magnus Carlsen), Sberbank (Ian Nepomniachtchi) and Optiver (Anish Giri) just to name a few.
Former World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik liked to play the French and once described it as a 'difficult and dangerous opening'. But in this 60 minutes video IM Andrew Martin suggests an aggressive and little-used idea of the renowned attacking player GM Viktor Kupreichik to counter the French: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Be3!?. Andrew Martin uses the games of Kupreichik to show why this line could catch many French aficionados unprepared and is very dangerous for Black. Attacking players will love this line and the unusual complications that it promotes.
Naturally, a universal approach using ...Nf6, ...g7-g6 and ...d7-d5 as the base would be very useful for players of all classes, saving time and energy and promising a fluid, dynamic position.
