European Women's Championship: Mkrtchian and Konsintseva win

3/20/2009 – IM Lilit Mkrtchian from Armenia and IM Tatiana Kosintseva from Russia both won their final round game to share first in Saint Petersburg. Tomorrow a tiebreak match will decide who takes the title. There are also matches for bronze (seven players shared third) and for a place in the World Championship. 10th European Individual Women's Championship,
Saint Petersburg 2009

The 10th European Individual Women's Chess Championship is taking place from March 7 – 21, 2009, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The venue is the Park Inn Pulkovskaya Hotel (Pobedy or Victory Square 1) in a huge Soviet style playing hall. The players are in two differents rooms, downstairs the top 20 boards, with their games broadcast live on the Internet (thanks to Evgeny Tkachiev), and upstairs the rest of the players. The rate of play is 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move from move number one. The prize fund is 87,500 Euros, with € 10,000 going to the winner, € 7500 for second place, € 6000 € for third, etc., with € 1000 going to the twentieth place.

Report after round eleven

In the final (eleventh) round of the European Women's Championship IM Tatiana Kosintseva, Russia, defeated IM Ekaterina Kovalevskaya, Russia, (who was the sole leader after ten rounds), and IM Lilit Mkrtchian, Armenia, defeated WGM Marina Romanko, Russia, to share joint first place with 8.5/11 points. They are followed by seven players with 8.0 points each, and then ten players with half a point less. On Friday there will be tiebreak games (see below).

Tiebreaks

First of all there will be a match for the Championship title between Lilit Mkrtchian and Tatiana Kosintseva, starting at 14:00h local time (12:00 noon CET or 06:00 a.m. EST). There will be tiebreak games for the bronze medal (Moniko Socko gets a bye in the first round), starting from 10:00 a.m. local time, or 8 a.m. CET, 2 a.m EST.

There is also a match for the 14th qualifying place in the Women's World Championship knockout, between IM Mariya Muzychuk, Ukraine, and IM Irina Vasilevich, Russia, starting at 14:00h local time. All matches are knockout 15+10, 5+2 and armageddon.
