Open: Alkaloid, SuperChess, Novy Bor and Nitra lead

Round four of the European Club Cup brought the first top pairings in the open section. Macedonian side Alkaloid faced the Israeli representatives Ashdod. On the second, two of the leading favourites, Vugar Gashimov and SuperChess Romania, faced each other. Top seeds Bayegan Pendik Chess Sports Club met the Montenegrin representatives Elektroprivreda. On table four, Novy Bor faced Rishon LeZion's A team.

All four top matches were hard-fought, and at three tables, only one team emerged victorious. Alkaloid defeated Ashdod 3½-2½. Wei Yi, Yu Yangyi and Velimir Ivic scored the wins for Alkaloid.

The Azerbaijani team Vugar Gashimov, who had looked so convincing up to this point, suffered their first major setback against SuperChess Romania. The match ended 4-2 in favour of the Romanian team. One of the three wins came on board six, where Belgian star Daniel Dardha produced an energetic attacking game.

Novy Bor recorded a clear 4½-1½ victory over Rishon LeZion's A team. Nihal Sarin, Pentala Harikrishna and Nils Grandelius contributed full points.

The matches between Elektroprivreda and Bayegan Pendik Chess Sports Club, and between Tuxera Aquaprofit Nagykanizsai and Aix-en-Provence, both ended 3-3.

Pranav Anand scored on board one for Elektroprivreda against Anish Giri.

The German teams apparently exert a strong attraction on one another. After Löberitz and Klub Kölner Schachfreunde had already been paired against each other in round three of the Women's Cup, with KKS coming out on top, the open section now saw St. Pauli face Schachfreunde Berlin. Both teams had collected 4 match points so far.

All six boards produced decisive results, with Berlin eventually winning 4-2.

As the third German club, Erlangen, a third-division side from the Bavarian Oberliga, had also collected 4 match points from the first three rounds and were now paired with the English team Cheddleton Savills Caterling. In the end, however, Erlangen suffered a 5½-½ defeat.

No chance for Erlangen

At the lower tables, Weisse Dame Hamburg, König Tegel and TSV Schönaich also suffered defeats. Mülheim-Nord were the only German club in the open section to record a win.

The Eifel chess region is also well represented, including teams from Luxembourg and Belgium.

The Luxembourg team from Echternach, with Christopher Noe on board one, won clearly against Drejtesia

The Netherlands are also represented by a number of teams.

Women's: Gambit Bonnevoie beat Monte-Carlo

In the Women's Cup, with only 22 participating teams, the first top clashes had already taken place in round three. Defending champions Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo and CE Gambit Bonnevoie were the last teams to remain on a perfect score and therefore contested the top match of round four.

Anna Ushenina and Aleksandra Goryachkina drew their game

And Cramling v. Aleksandra Maltsevskaya also ended in a draw.

The decisive result came on board three, where Elina Danielian from Armenia defeated Stavroula Tsolakidou from Greece.

Mitrovica scored a convincing win against Pardubice on table two.

After their win over Löberitz, the women from Kölner Schachfreunde moved up to table three, where they had to face the strong Azerbaijani team Odlar Yurdu. In the end, they were unable to hold the balance, losing 2½-1½.

Löberitz, meanwhile, defeated Gostivar 3-1.
