European Team Chess Championships 2007

Crete, Greece / 27 October – 7 November

The European Team Championship is taking place in Crete, Greece. It is a nine round Swiss team tournament, with one general section and one section for the women's teams, considered as separate competitions. According to FIDE rules, the time controls are 90 min for 40 moves + 30 min for the rest of the game + 30 sec increment for every move played starting from the first move. Friday is a free day.

Round five report

The top battle between the two leading teams, who had a perfect match score of 8/8 points after round four, turned into a rout. Russia beat Azerbaijan 3.5:0.5, with Peter Svidler, Alexander Morozevich and Evgeny Axekseev beating Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Teimour Radjabov and Gadir Guseinov respectively. Ukraine drew France, with Etienne Bacrot defeating Vassily Ivanchuk with the black pieces in just 27 moves. A blackout by the world's number two ranked player.

Ivanchuk (UKR) - Bacrot (FRA)
European Team Championships 2007 Heraklio, Crete (5.5), 2007
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 a6 5.c5 Nbd7 6.Bf4 Nh5 7.Bd2 Nhf6 8.Qc2 g6 9.g3 e5 10.dxe5 Ng4 11.e6 Nxc5 12.exf7+ Kxf7 13.e4 Bg7 14.Bg2 Bxc3 15.Bxc3 dxe4 16.Bxh8 Nd3+ 17.Kf1 exf3 18.Bxf3 Ngxf2 19.Qb3+ Ke7 20.Bg7 Bh3+ 21.Bg2 Qd7 22.Bxh3 Qxh3+ 23.Kg1 Qf5

White currently has an exchange for a pawn, but Black is treatening mate in three: 24...Nh3+ 25.Kg2 Qe4 Kxh3 Nf2#. In this dire situation Ivanchuk goes after the b-pawn: 24.Qxb7+? Kd6 25.Qb6?? This move blocks the mate on f2 in the above variation, but allows 25...Qf3 (threatening mate in one) 26.Qd4+ Kc7 27.Be5+ Kc8 and now White cannot prevent mate in four. 0-1.

In the women's section Poland dropped their first point, but since it was against their main rivals Russia, the draw left the top of the table unchanged. The winners were Iweta Rajlich for Poland and Ekaterina Korbut for Russia. Georgia defeated Greece 1 with a 3:1 score to catch the Russians in second place, while Slovenia did the same with a 2.5:1.5 victory over Hungary.
