ECTC R3: Russia loses to France

by ChessBase
8/1/2005 – That was the big news in round three of the European Team Championship. The other was that Germany won their third match in succession, over Sweden I, to stay in the lead. In the women's section Russia scored its third win, while Ukraine went down to Georgia. Oh, and the correct pronunciation is 'yet a boy!'

15th European Chess Team Championship

First of all we would like to clear up a very grave problem that has arisen in our reporting of this event. We carelessly stated that the town of Gothenburg is spelled "Göteborg" in Swedish and pronounced 'yöteborg', the 'ö' rhyming with "eight", spoken with puckered lips. Not so, protested Thommy Perlinger from Kalmar, Sweden. "The letter "ö" in Göteborg does not rhyme with 'eight', it rhymes with the 'u' in 'burst'."

That is true to a certain degree. The 'ö' in Swedish and German are similar. Both are transcribed in the American Heritage Dictionary pronunciation key using 'œ', which is used for the French 'feu' and 'oeuf', as well as the German 'schön' and 'zwölf'. The Columbia Encyclopedia system transcribes the vowel as 'ö', and specifies "as in French peu and German Goethe". This sound is best rendered by untrained foreigners by replacing it with an "ay", as we said, and speaking it with puckered (rounded) lips, i.e. French: fay and ayf, for feu and oeuf; German: shayn and tswaylf for schön and zwölf with rounded lips. It is certainly better than replacing the 'ö' with an English 'o' (in German 'schön' means beautiful, 'schon' means already).

In the international dictionaries the pronunciation of Göteborg is given as (AHD transcription) or (International Phonetic Transcription). But let us see what it sounds like when spoken by a native Swede:

As you can see (or hear) modern Swedes tend to pronounce the 'ö' more like the 'e' in the English "yet", which makes it all quite simple for us. Simply say "yet a boy" and you will fool the natives. Naturally, as always the English-speaking world has another well-tried remedy for foreign places that are hard to pronounce: they simply give the city an easier name, Gothenburg. The French in fact call it Gothemburg. The Swedes are going to have to live with this.

We are glad that we have got that behind us (hopefully) and can return to the matter at hand – which was chess, was it not? Today we bring you the results, games and a lot of pictures.
