The European Club Cup took place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from October 16th-24th 2010. A total of 351 players participated in the open section, with 135 GMs, 61 IMs, and 247 titled players altogether – 24 rated over 2700 Elo. The women's section had 64 players with ten GMs, 23 IMs, and 51 titled players.

The event was won by the team Economist-SGSEU-1 of Saratov, for a second consecutive time. Economist tied their closest rivals Yugra 3-3 in a hard-fought final round in which all six games were drawn. Top seeds SOCAR Azerbaijan and ShSM-64 Moscow similarly tied their final round match, but with two decisive games: Shakhriyar Mamedyarov beat Boris Gelfand and Alexander beat Alexei Shirov.

In the final round the German Team Champions Baden-Baden OSG scored a 3.5:2.5 victory over Mika Yerevan (with Arkadij Naiditsch winning the only decisive game). Baden-Baden joined the follow-up group of four teams with eleven match points each.

Top performers and personalities

Portrait pictorial by Elena Mikheeva and WGM Irina Sudakova

The best performance (of any player with six or more games) was scored by Levon Aronian, playing for Mika Yerevan, who chalked up three wins and three draws for a 2884 rating performance.

Aronian's result of 4.5/6 produced a 2884 performance and represented an important milestone: the Armenian GM and world's fourth highest ranked player unofficially broke the 2800 rating barrier, finishing the tournament at 2801 on the live rating lists. If this rating remains intact for the official November FIDE ratings (it will) Lev will be number three and, more importantly, become the sixth player to cross the 2800 rating mark, joining Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, and Magnus Carlsen. Congratulations to this very likable young player.

Women's section

After a slow start the favourites Cercle d'Echecs from Monte Carlo took two matches with a 3:1, and finished with a 2:2 draw against AVS to score ten out of 14 points – the same as the St. Petersburg Chess Club, but with an extra board point. Thus the team with Humpy and Ho Yifan finished as winners of the 2010 European Club Cup champions.
