The oldest player is Boris Gelfand, who starts the event on the eve of his 39th birthday. The world's top-ranked player, Viswanathan Anand, is a year and a half younger. By far the youngest player in the field is 16-year-old Norwegian prodigy Magnus Carlsen, who is playing in Dortmund for the first time. Russian GM Evgeny Alexeev qualified for Dortmund by winning the Aeroflot Open 2007 in Moscow, and Arkadij Naiditsch, the only German player, sensationally won the tournament two years ago.

The games of Dortmund 2007, which start at 15:00h local time (CEST), will be broadcast live on the official site and on Playchess.com server. On the latter, starting from Sunday, June 24, there will be daily live audio commentary by GM Yasser Seirawan, with a minimum of three one hour lectures per round, beginning approximately thirty minutes after play has started. For a charge of ten Ducats (about one Euro) a visitor gets a twelve hour pass to listen to the live lectures.
