Corus 05: Wijk aan Zee Super-GM begins

Wijk aan Zee 14 – 30 January 2005

The event is being held from January 14 to 30 (first and last rounds) at the De Moriaan Community Centre in Wijk aan Zee, Holland. A special commentary pavilion is located a minute's walk away, on the village green.

There are three main tournaments, all 14-player round robins. The rounds start at 13.30 hours, except for the last round on 30 January, which begins at 12.30 hours (Grandmaster Group C at 11.30 hours). There are rest days on January 19, 24 and 27. The rate of play in groups A and B is 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by 20 moves in 1 hour and 30 minutes to finish the game. In group C it is 40 moves in 2 hours, plus 1 hour for the rest of the game.

The participants in the Grandmaster Group B have an average age of 23 years. Among the 14 participants are seven teenagers (Mamedyarov, Carlsen, Cheparinov, Karjakin, Ramirez, Smeets and Stellwagen). Magnus Carlsen is 14, Sergey Karjakin turned 15 on January 12.. Antoaneta Stefanova is the reigning women's world champion, Alexandra Kosteniuk the European women's champion.
