A solid fixture in the South American circuit
Press release
Last Friday, January 31, the 8th edition of the "Ciudad de Montevideo Open" began at the Montevideo Municipality Conference Center, organized by IA Sabrina de San Vicente. This tournament, now a solid fixture in the South American circuit, is sponsored by Argentine businessmen and International Master Tomas Darcyl and Dr. Ricardo Costianovsky, offering over $5,000 in prizes for the Open, Women's and 60+ categories.
Once again, thanks to the invaluable support of journalist Silvia Pérez, Sports Coordinator of Montevideo Municipality, the event is being held for the eighth time.
The tournament is being played in the Red and Golden Hall of the Montevideo Municipality Conference Center, ensuring comfort for all participants. It also has the support of FIDE, the Uruguayan Chess Federation, and Club Banco República.

This year, for the first time, we welcomed GM Samy Shoker from Egypt, who has been participating in several tournaments in the region, previously in Chile and then in Brazil before arriving in our capital to start the tournament as the number one seed. Rounding out the top positions in the ranking are Argentine International Masters Lucas Coro and Julian Villca, along with Uruguayan FIDE Master Facundo Vázquez, all aiming for the championship title.
After the first five rounds, four players are tied for first place: IMs Julian Villca and Lucas Coro from Argentina, Claudio Coppola from Uruguay, and FM Facundo Vazquez from Uruguay, all with 4½ points. Just half a point behind them are eight more players looking to catch up in the remaining rounds. In the sixth round, scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, at 6:30 PM Uruguay time, board one will feature an encounter between Lucas Coro and Facundo Vázquez, while board two will see Claudio Coppola facing Julian Villca.
The tournament will continue with one round per day until Saturday, February 8, when the final results will be determined.
All games can be followed on ChessBase's live portal and through the official Twitch broadcast by FM José Riverol on Nau64ajedrez.

Chess Promotional Tournament
He was a child prodigy and he is surrounded by legends. In his best times he was considered to be unbeatable and by many he was reckoned to be the greatest chess talent of all time: Jose Raul Capablanca, born 1888 in Havana.
Meanwhile, on Monday, February 3, the 2nd edition of the Chess Promotional Tournament kicked off also at the Montevideo City Hall, running parallel to the Open. This tournament is open to amateurs and players with a FIDE rating below 1800, providing a great opportunity to enter the official competition circuit.
This edition features 45 participants competing for the title, with a strong presence of young players eager to establish themselves in national chess.
The tournament consists of five rounds and will conclude on Friday, February 7. There will be raffles for participants before each round, and all categories will be awarded prizes.
