Ankara R10: Humpy wins and catches Muzychuk

by ChessBase
9/28/2012 – One round to go, and the question is who will it be? Who will win second place in the current cycle of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix and possibly get a shot at challenging the world champion in 2013. India's top female GM Humpy Koneru caught the leader Anna Muzychuk in the tenth round and the last game will have to decide. The final round start on Friday at 11:00 a.m. local time.

Winning starts with what you know
The new version 18 offers completely new possibilities for chess training and analysis: playing style analysis, search for strategic themes, access to 6 billion Lichess games, player preparation by matching Lichess games, download Chess.com games with built-in API, built-in cloud engine and much more.

From 15th to 29th September 2012 the sixth Women's Grand Prix is taking place in Ankara, the capital of Turkey and the country’s second largest city after Istanbul. It is the last of the 2011–2012 series of elite events organised by FIDE and Global Chess. The winner of each tournament takes home 6,500 Euros, the total prize fund is 40,000 Euros. The overall winner will get a further 15,000 Euros at the end of the series, and qualifies to challenge the Women's World Champion in 2013. Starting time of the games is 15:00h (check your local time here). The final round starts five hours earlier – at 10:00 a.m. local time. A full shedule with all pairings is given at the bottom of the page.

In the tenth round of the FIDE Women Grand Prix in Ankara Anna Muzychuk (above left) lost a good chance to gain an advantage against Viktorija Cmilyte, and game finished in a draw.

Humpy Koneru (above right) confidently won her game against Kubra Ozturk to catch up with Slovenian player. Thus both of them lead in the tournament with 7,5 points, half a point above Zhao Xue, who won against Betul Yildiz and placed third with one round to go.

Tatiana Kosintseva (above) showed good preparation today and caught her opponent Ju Wenjun in the opening. The Chinese player failed to find the exact moves which would hav led the game to a force draw and as a result was outplayed by Russian GM.

The games Stefanova-Socko and Batkhuyag-Lufei ended peacefully.

The last round is going to decide the overall second place in the current FIDE Grand Prix series. Humpy Koneru (above before round ten) plays white against Monika Socko, who seems to be not in best shape, while Anna Muzychuk is going to face Ruan Lufei, who plays with white and is placed fourth in the tournament. Zhao Xue, who also got good chances to fight for medals, plays with white against Tatiana Kosintseva. Note that the games start at 11:00 a.m. local time.

Viktorija went for Dragon Sicilian and managed to get sufficient counterplay, so the game was balanced till the very end and finished in a draw. 15...Rd8 A novelty. 15...Rb8 was previously played - 16.Bc4 Rb4 17.a3 Rxc4 18.Qxc4 Ne3 19.Qh4 Nxd1 20.Rxd1 Qe5 21.Ne4 Bf5 22.Re1 Bxe4 23.Rxe4 Qc5 with even chances, 1/2 Kryvoruchko,Y (2666)-Jones,G (2635)/Reykjavik ISL 2012/ 16.Bc4 Bf5 17.Bb3 h5 18.Rhe1?! This centralising move is too soft. White could fight for advantage with 18.g4 hxg4 19.fxg4 e5 19...Nf4 20.Bxf7+ Kxf7 21.Qc4+ Rd5 22.gxf5 gxf5 23.Rhf1 e5 24.Nd3± 20.Qg1 Nf4 21.Re1 Bc8 22.h4 developing a dangerous attack agains opponent's king. 18...Nb6 19.Qe3 Hardly better would have been 19.Qe5 Rxd1+ 20.Kxd1 Qd8+ 21.Kc1 e6 and Black has to be fine there. 19...Rxd1+ 20.Rxd1 Qxh2 21.Qxe7 Nd5 22.Qe2 Nf4? A mistake, which wasn't used by Anna, as she played 23.Qe7? 23.Qe5 would have been really unpleasent for Black, for instance h4 24.Kb1 Qg3 25.Ne4 Bxe4 26.Bxf7+ Kh7 27.Qxe4 with a huge advantage. 23...Nd5 24.Qe2 Qf4+ 25.Kb1 Qe3 26.Qxe3 Nxe3 27.Rd2 The endgame is close to equality, perhaps it's already White who has to be careful as the black kingside pawns might become dangerous. In few more moves they transposed to a rook endgame without much chances to sucseed for any side, so after elimination of all pawns a draw was finally agreed. ½–½
