Caruana beats Aronian in tiebreaks

On the fourth day of the American Cup, Fabiano Caruana v. Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura v. Leinier Dominguez were the pairings in the semifinals of the Champions Bracket in the open section. In the first classical encounters, both encounters ended in draws. Hikaru Nakamura won the second game and was thus the first finalist.

In the second match, it took longer to find the winner. The second classical game also ended in a draw. This was followed by a playoff round with blitz games, in which both Caruana and Aronian each won a game. Caruana finally prevailed in the second round of blitz encounters.

In the women's tournament, Alice Lee and Tatev Abrahamyan took the lead against Irina Krush and Carissa Yip on the first day. Alice Lee held on to her lead with a draw. Irina Krush levelled the score with a win. Abrahamyan won the subsequent playoff.

The finals of the Champions Brackets are therefore Nakamura against Caruana and Lee against Abrahamyan.
