The 47th Capablanca Memorial started and as is customary includes both top Cuban players with elite foreign GMs. There are two tournaments, the Elite group as well as the Premier. The Elite brings top Latin American player Leinier Domínguez (2730) as well as Yuniesky Quesada (2625), followed by Vassily Ivanchuk (2764), Ian Nepomniachtchi (2718), Victor Laznicka (2702), and Vladimir Potkin (2669) who will play each other in a double round-robin.

More players and the eager audience
The Premier group was to have had secon Cuban Lazaro Bruzon, who just broke the 2700 barrier, but who withdrew for personal reasons. As a result, the top-seed is Russian GM Alexander Rakhmanov (2602) and the second seed, also the only IM in the group, is IM Yusnel Bacallao rated 2580 no less.

The first round of the Elite group marked an opening win by Cuban Leinier Domínguez over Czech Victor Laznicka after the latter blundered a few moves before the time control. The other two games were drawn.
