The daily magazine Chess Today reports that many stars are absent, for various reasons. Carlsen after his victory in China refused to play for Norway in order to prepare better for the Tal Memorial. Grischuk was excluded from the Russian team, according to Sport-Express, because he refused to appear at the team's training session. Ukraine's participation was under question until the early October. The Ukrainian men's team is playing without most of the top-rated GMs. Israel is playing without Gelfand; England is playing without Short; Hungary is playing without Leko.

The first round started with a number of surprises: Croatia held Russia to a 2:2 draw – with Morozevich winning and Jakovenko losing. Bulgaria lost to Italy, with Fabiano Caruana downing Ivan Cheparinov on board one. Switzerland beat Ukraine with Joe Gallagher defeating Yuriy Kryvoruchko on board four. Norway went 0.5:3:5 against France – could have been 1.0:3.0 if Carlsen were playing. Netherlands took Wales to the cleaners with a 4-0 victory.
