The defending champion is GM David Howell, who leads the field after two rounds – together with ten other players on 2.0/2 points. The 101st British Chess Championships are taking place 19th to 30th July 2014 in Aberystwyth in West Wales.

Since the late 19th century Aberystwyth has also been a major Welsh educational centre, with the establishment of a university college there in 1872. The town's population is 16,000, with an influx of over 10,000 students during nine months of the year.

The entry fee for the Championship is £200 (£150 U-21), which is free to GMs, IMs, WGMs, WIMs, and half price to FMs and WFMs. This event is open only to exempted or qualified players. There are a number of sections: Senior Championships; Major Open; Under 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16; Rapidplay Open, Weekenders, etc.
