Top players in Iceland

3/15/2004 – Reykjavik, the capital of the volcanic island of Iceland, has been host to many famous tournaments. Currently the XXI Reykjavik Open is being held there. When it ends the top four players join the likes of Kasparov, Short and Karpov in the Reykjavik Rapid 2004, which begins on Wednesday. Here are the details.

The XXI Reykjavik Open 2004 has been running in the Reykjavik City Hall since March 7th. There are 76 players, all with a minimum rating of 2200, and after six rounds the leaders are as shown in the table on the left.

The tournament will end on Tuesday, March 16, with round nine. Then things become really interesting.

The four leading players, plus the top Icelandic participant qualify for the Reykjavik Rapid 2004. This will be held from March 17 to 21, 2004. The qualifiers from the Open are joined by the following illustrious set:
