The tournament took place in Växjö from June 28 to July 7. GM Vitaly Sivuk defended his national title by obtaining an undefeated 6½/9 score. GM Vitaly Sivuk won the Swedish Championship 2024, defending his national title.

Like last year, the Swedish Championship 2024 featured several categories, from a youth tournament to the Sverigemästarklassen, a round-robin tournament with classical time control for Sweden’s top chess players. The tournament took place in Växjö’s spacious Fortnox Arena from June 28 to July 7.

The defending champion took an early lead with four straight victories. Surprisingly, Vitaly then drew all his remaining games, but it was enough to secure the title with 6½/9 points. The 2022 champion, Jonny Hector, finished a half point behind and took silver, while Erik Blomqvist captured bronze thanks in no small part to his spectacular penultimate-round victory over Tiger Hillarp.

Going for complications. 15.Na4 is the more natural alternative: Bxd3 16.Qxd3 Rc8 17.b3 c5 with a complicated middlegame struggle. 15...bxc3 16.Bb7 16.Bd3 is favoured by the engines, immediately placing the bishop on an attacking square - in the game, White eventually created a deadly attack on the kingside, nonetheless. 16...Rb8 17.Bxc6 cxb2 18.Rb1 Qc7 19.Ba4 Qc3 An inaccuracy by Pantzar, which allows White to break through in the centre and get an initiative on the kingside. 19...Bd6 places the bishop on a more active square while preventing White from immediately pushing his e-pawn, e.g.: 20.Re1 Rb4 21.Bb3 Qa7 22.a3 Rb7 and the double-edged battle continues. 20.e4 Clearly the way to go! dxe4 Too optimistic: opening up the centre favours White. 20...Qa3 is better, and after 21.e5 Nb6 22.Bxe8 Nxe8 Black will try to prove he has compensation for the exchange with his queenside pawns. 21.fxe4 Red8 22.Qe2 Nb6 23.Bb5 White is better, but he needs to make the most of his initiative before Black gets to push his a-pawn down the board. Rxd4 The best move according to the engines, getting some counterplay. 24.Bxd4 Qxd4+ 25.Kh1 Ba3 26.e5 Nfd5
The losing mistake. 26...Nbd5 gives Black better chances to survive, threatening ...Nd5-c3 to make the most of his dangerous passer, e.g.: 27.Nf5 27.exf6 is not precise for White due to Nc3 28.Qf3 Nxb1 29.Rxb1 Rxb5 30.Qxa3 Qxf6 with dynamic equality. 27...Qe4 28.exf6 Qxe2 29.Bxe2 Nc3 30.Bd3 Nxb1 31.Rxb1 and White is still better, though Sivuk could have faltered before reaching this position, and the ensuing endgame requires some work. 27.Nf5 Qb4 28.e6 Black is doomed! f6 29.Qh5
