Daniël Noteboom Tournament 2009 |
Ukrainian GM Yuri Solodovnichenko won the 69th Daniël Noteboom Tournament,
which took place from 20-22 February 2009 in Leiden (Netherlands). Yuri Solodovnichenko
and Friso Nijboer scored both 5.5/6 points, but Solodovnichenko won the cup
having a better Buchholz score.

In the final round Yuri Solodovnichenko defeated Erik Van Den Doel and Friso
Nijboer defeated Martin Roobol. Predrag Nikolic, Roi Miedema, Roger Meng and
Bob Beeke tied for third place with 5.0 points. The tournament attracted 317
participants: 146 participants (including four GMs and one IM) in the main group
(Group A, Elo > 1800), plus 88 participants in the second group (Group B,
1600 < Elo < 1900), and 83 participants in the third group (Group C, Elo
< 1700).

Second on tiebreak points: Dutch GM Friso Nijboer

Third: GM Predrag Nikolic, winner in 2007 and 2008

Fifth: Twelve-year-old Roger Meng, with 5.0/6 points
Group B was won by Jaap Van Der Heijden and group C was won by Donna Kok.

The Daniël Noteboom Tournament is a weekend tournament, 48 hours from
Friday night till Sunday afternoon, six rounds Swiss 40 moves/105 minutes +
15 minutes to finish the game. The tournament was organized by chess club LSG.
The 70th Daniël Noteboom Tournament will be held 12-14 February 2010.

Solodovnichenko and Noteboom
Daniël Noteboom was a Dutch chess player, born in Noordwijk. He became
known at the 1930 Chess Olympiad at Hamburg, scoring 11.5/15. After playing
at Hastings 1931/2 he died of pneumonia in London at the age of 21, ending a
brief but promising chess career. A chess opening variation of the Semi-Slav
Defence to the Queen's Gambit is often called the Noteboom Variation: 1.d4 d5
2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 dxc4 5.a4 Bb4 6.e3 b5 7.Bd2 a5 8.axb5 Bxc3 9.Bxc3 cxb5
