On the sidelines of the Grand Prix tournament, a memorial tournament in honour of Mikhail Tal was held in Riga. The main tournament was a rapid that was well-stocked both in terms of quantity and quality of the field.
Among the almost 280 players, including many Latvians, was David Navara (who played after being eliminated from the Grand Prix), Alexey Shirov, Nikita Vitiugov and many other grandmasters. At the end of the eleven round Swiss system tournament, Vladimir Fedoseev celebrated sole first place with a stellar 9½/11. Navara took second place.
Fedoseev also did well in the blitz, but it was Latvia's top player Igor Kovalenko who sliced through the blitz tournament field to finish with 12/13 a full 1½ points ahead of the Russian.
European Chess TV provided the live webcasts hosted by WIM Anna Kantane and GM Toms Kantans, sponsored in part by new FIDE partner, Coca-Cola.
