In the positions below the diagrams will defend for the black side. Below the board is a notation icon, which allows you to track your moves.

P1: Which piece do you move?

This is a wonderful little study, composed in 1890 by Berthold Lasker, the older brother of Emanuel, the future World Champion.

The problem here is that we cannot prevent Black from promoting his c-pawn. So we must try to counter that, best by checkmating the black king – which looks dangerously trapped on h8. We must simply find the right move to start a forced mating combination.

P3: Can you stop those pawns?

In this position the two black pawns on g2 and f2 seem unstoppable. Try it out – nothing seems to work. Except for a very clever manoeuvre to win. Can you find it?
