Worse disease than the common cold/corona is chicken pox etc. No plastic gloves, just a mask because leftists wanted to copy china. So the media goes from dont wear masks if you are not sick, to okay fine we have to add this to our new false religion along with the rest of the bs.

Masks prevent the virus probably less than the non-immunity but hyper marketed vaccines. It's no one's right to force someone to wear a mask if they are not coughing. It's only optics for the people who want to interfere in someone elses' life, instead of respecting difference of views.

Chessbase: "The organizers shared the following message on Twitter:

Daniil Dubov tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. A second test requested by Dubov himself showed a negative result. The Dutch health authorities stipulate that in these circumstances the positive test result stands and supersedes the negative outcome."

Who wrote something like this? "I wish Dubov a quick recovery, but, to be honest, I'm not surprised that he has contracted the disease. Irresponsible "principles" lead to bad results. This is the moral of the story"

Hah, hah, haa, a very disrespectful statement! Where is the moral of this story? Do not say anything disrespectful which you will later regret.

PCR tests are infallible, right? No wonder Dubov tested both negative and positive in short succession, so that we can't know for sure which one is which. Is he even sick? Was anybody sick?

@adbennet - Michael is correct. That 'reason' given does not stand up to close scrutiny. A level playing field for the awarding of prizes at the end of the tournament is imperative. Simply exclude Dubov's results...played and not played and consider it a tourney with 1 less round. Totally fair to all participants as no one would 'benefit'.

I like your comment, Lovuschka. It's not about politics. It's about the preponderance of evidence that we live during a pandemic and must respect one another...I love Dubov but respect the tournament direction in protecting members of the tournament and the results of the tournament. Mask are a way to protect people and if you take that away, it's diminishing the protection of others. Remarkably and yet not hard to predict, Dubov eventually tested positive proving that wearing a mask was prudent for Dubov and withdrawal was but a corollary.

I think many fall for a misconception.
Masks are not there to protect you. They are there to protect others from you. If you are infected and you don't wear a mask, you can infect others, regardless if they wear a mask or not. The virus can enter the body through any opening, not just mouth and nose.

At least that is what I read somewhere around two years ago.

What a moron. Refuses to wear a mask and then tests positive. Of course it usually happens this way, b/c ignorant ppl don't adhere to precautions, thus increasing the chance of contracting covid.

Chess used to be synonymous with intelligence (although chess-players know the nuances) for the general population, but with incidents like this, which will continue, the game will be slowly drawn into disrepute.

I wish Dubov a quick recovery, but, to be honest, I'm not surprised that he has contracted the disease. Irresponsible "principles" lead to bad results. This is the moral of the story.

@Michael Jones and what about Vidit and Grandelius, who have earned a win against Dubov over the table? Should their win be erased from history? I think it is perfectly logical that Dubov's results are counted into the results. And since Dubov forfeits all his games from now on, his results from now on are all losses.

Bunch of morons the lot of em!!

@Michael Jones - Someone else made the same comment on the live games thread. You haven't thought it through, there's a good reason for the way the rule is written.

Gives an unfair advantage to those who hadn't yet played him over those who had. They should have excluded all his games from the crosstable (but let them stand for rating purposes) and treated it as a 13-player tournament.

Actually, sprinkling with eau de Lourdes could also be effective, if you had enough of it. That's how chemical scrubbers work. You don't even have to be a believer.

guest,
Dubov was asked to wear a mask to protect others. I hope that will work.
And I don't want to put doubt on the inmense wisdom of people like malfa, but the majority of experts still think masks have that effect. As long as that's the case, at least I will rather follow their advice instead of that by the malfa's - as I am not an expert (like presumably the rest of the people writing here).

I am surprised that the player who is against wearing masks was the first to get infected. It has to be a coincidence, because masks don't work. I remember the comment of @malfa when Dubov forfeited against Giri :

"For what it matters, they could have made him asperse himself with eau de Lourdes, same protection as a mask, for believers."

I guess that means all the participants will have to wear masks from now on (inculding Karjakin). Although that will be the tournament's doctor's decision.
