9/11/2022 – Max Euwe was the first of the twelve World Chess Champions whom Frederic met in the late before and during his involvement with ChessBase. In our new weekly series he tells us how he met and befriended the top players, and the adventures they experienced together. Frederic has written a new book, together with Professor Christian Hesse, with fascinating chess stories from the last 50 years. It will appear (first in German) in October.

9/11/2022 – From September 2 to 11 the Polish team championship, the "Ekstraliga", takes place in Bydgoszcz. The tournament is a round-robin event with ten teams, and after six rounds VOTUM SA POLONIA WROCLAW leads with 10/12. The best Polish players start in the "Ekstraliga" but also international stars such as Pentala Harikrishna, Nils Grandelius, Vincent Keymer, Lucas Van Foreest, Anton Korobov, David Navara, and others. 9/11/2022 – The Sinquefield Cup is taking place on September 2-12 at the Saint Louis Chess Club. Magnus Carlsen heads a star-studded field, which includes eight ‘tour regulars’. 9/11/2022 – A remarkable penultimate round at the Sinquefield Cup saw Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja scoring full points to climb to shared first place with 4½ points each. For Caruana, however, it is all but impossible to win the event, as he will not play in Sunday’s final round, when he was supposed to face Magnus Carlsen. 9/10/2022 – That is the question, as it were. Put simply, it is the automated extraction of creative characteristics or ‘elements’ from one domain for application into another. Human brains do this all the time. Dr. Azlan Iqbal, computer scientist from Malaysia, with research interests in computational aesthetics and creativity in games, uses his problem composing software Chesthetica to illustrate transmutation in computing.

9/10/2022 – On Friday last week, Croatian grandmaster Miso Cebalo passed away in Zagreb. In his younger years, Cebalo was one of Yugoslavia’s best bridge players. He was also a linguistic genius. Cebalo was a national player for Yugoslavia, then Croatia, and in later years was active as an author, commentator and coach. Miso Cebalo was 77 years old.

9/7/2022 – In the Ragozin Variation of the Queen's Gambit (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 Bb4) Black takes an active path with 4…Bb4. In his theory article in the current ChessBase magazine, Roven Vogel examines the continuation 5.Qa4+ Nc6 6.e3, which has already been tested many times by Vincent Keymer. Our author has processed no less than eight games of the German number one in his article and shows that "both sides have possibilities to create interesting play in many places" and sees this "as a chance to play an interesting game of chess". 9/7/2022 – At the end of the 22nd Dubai Open, no fewer than seven Indians were among the top ten, the best of them was Aravindh Chithambaram who was sole first with 7.5/9. 9/6/2022 – 20-year old Andrey Esipenko was top seed in the first tournament of this year's Julius Baer Challenge and he lived up to his role: With two draws and 13 wins, he finished clear first with 41 from 45 possible points (winning a game in the Julius Bär Challenge yielded 3 points).
