Kasparov pays tribute to Korchnoi

6/8/2016 – At age 85, and seriously enfeebled as any could see even in photos or videos, one would think Viktor Korchnoi's death would be no great shock, and yet it was. The reason is that he had long seemed living proof age was only a number, not a reality. In print and online everywhere, players are writing tributes and testimonies. Here is Garry Kasparov's, one of his biggest admirers.

Jon Speelman: Agony Column #5

6/8/2016 – Computer engines generate thousands and hundreds of thousands moves per second. The majority of these moves are utter nonsense but the sheer numbers help the machine to play strong chess. The move-generator of the human mind is less well-tuned and much more limited but also finds remarkable moves. As Jon Speelman illustrates in his Agony Colum #5.

Viktor Korchnoi dies at 85

6/6/2016 – He was one of the truly great chess players, a legend. He played in three matches that produced the World Champion, but in each case lost to Anatoly Karpov. It made him the strongest player never to have won the title. In 1976 he defected from the Soviet Union and took up residence in Switzerland, where he continued to be active into his eighties in spite of a stroke. Now he has gone and leaves a grieving chess community.

Philidor's "L'Analyze des Echecs"

6/6/2016 – When Tom Ewers analysed the endgame K+R+B against K+R he came across André Danican Philidor's book "L'Analyze des Echecs", in which Philidor had analysed this endgame more than 250 years ago with remarkable precision. From the analysis of the endgame Ewers soon moved to the book itself and wondered how the content changed with new editions and translations. Here are his findings.

Fritz Online: introducing the basics

6/5/2016 – When ChessBase began rolling out the web apps that now enrich the experience of Premium subscribers, one that stuck out for its primitivity was the Fritz Online app. It was a basic board with a handful of options that was waiting for the facelift and care the others had all received. Now the true feature-filled version is available and brings with it many interesting ideas.

Shamkir Rd9: Mamedyarov beats Caruana in playoff

6/4/2016 – In an astonishing round that had to have Gashimov smiling, the final round saw three of his compatriots winning their final games. However, the biggest result was of course Mamedyarov who defeated Giri in a superb rook endgame he played to perfection, right after beating Caruana in the previous round. In a nail-biting playoff, he defeated Caruana and snatched the title. Final report.

Muhammad Ali – indeed the greatest

6/4/2016 – "I used to tell people that in my youth I had three great sporting heroes: Muhammad Ali, Bobby Fischer and Franz Beckenbauer. Nobody else came close to them. A Dutch colleague had the same heroes, with Cruyff replacing Beckenbauer. Fischer died in January 2008, at the age of 64, Cruyff a few months ago at the age of 69, and now Dirk Jan and I both mourn the greatest boxer of all time." Eulogy by Frederic Friedel.

Shamkir Rd8: Three-way fight for first

6/3/2016 – It was a dramatic penultimate round in which leader Caruana hit an oil slick and lost to Mamedyarov. Things might have gone worse for him had rival Anish Giri managed to win his game against Hou Yifan a piece up, but in the end he failed to convert. Caruana, Giri, and Mamedyarov can all win now, since first place is decided by a playoff in the event of a draw. Round eight report.

But open tournaments are about more than the winner. In Zalakaros a number of young talents can still score a GM norm - and Indian GM Harika Dronavalli has the best chances to win the women's prize. Clear plan, complicated tactics

6/3/2016 – Tactics can seem deceptively simple, particularly when seeing an engine analysing grandmaster games. Strange, however, how difficult it is to find the right move and to calculate variations properly when playing yourself. It is easier if you solve tactical puzzles regularly. In the ChessBase Magazine and his tactics column Oliver Reeh helps you to do so.

6/3/2016 – France has one of the most comprehensive chess leagues anywhere, layered from top to bottom for players of all strengths and ages. At the very top is the suitably named Top12, which contrary to many leagues played out a few matches at a time over many months, is decided in a single round-robin between the teams. It is packed with grandmasters including MVL who is now world no. 4.

Shamkir Rd7: Caruana lets Giri escape

6/2/2016 – It was a tough round with a strange twist. Among the decisive results was Mamedyarov's strong win over Safarli, while Eljanov defeated Hou in a long battle up a piece but with technical issues. The game of the round was between the leaders Caruana and Giri, and, just when Fabiano had reached a won position, he needed to find a brilliant coup de grace! Alas! Still, the tournament is not over.

Shamkir Round six: peace returns

6/1/2016 – It seems that the rest day fueled the fire for some interesting games, but somehow or another none of them finished in decisive results. Caruana was by the far the one with the best winning chances, as he had Safarli against the ropes right from the opening. Yifan also had an edge against Harikrishna but let him go. At the end of the day, we saw five draws.

Jon Speelman's Agony Column #4

6/1/2016 – Which piece should you exchange, which piece should stay on the board? Knowing the right answers to this question is important for good positional play "the bedrock on which everything else stands", as Jon Speelman puts it in his fourth "Agony Column", in which he shows two examples of positional play. And congratulates a famous grandmaster who turned 51 today!
