1900 beats IM with 2400 - The Underdog

5/30/2026 – In this episode of The Underdog, Robert presents a game from the 25th European Women's Chess Championship 2026 in Batumi, Georgia. As he has done in several previous episodes, the featured game is not from the opening round but from round four. The talented Armenian player Polina Kobak faced IM Stavroula Tsolakidou of Greece, one of the tournament favourites, and met the King's Indian Defence with impressive play. Interestingly, both players had opportunities to force a draw, but neither was willing to settle for half a point.

In Part 6 of this series, Valery Golubenko combines personal memory, endgame tablebases, and hard logic to show how easily won positions can turn into marathon absurdities – and why some “record” games may owe their length not to difficulty, but to something far more human.

Robert Ris' Fast and Furious: Trompowsky

5/28/2026 – Trompowsky fans are in for a treat this week, as we are looking at a spectacular 22 moves miniature played at the Chinese Championships. Personally, I was glad to see that the players Bai Jinshi and Li Shilong followed a line I do recommend in my course The Top-Tier Trompowsky. Black opted for the well-known pawn grabbing idea with ...Qb6xb2 but soon found himself far behind in development. Bai didn't hesitate and was willing to invest two more pawns to launch a massive attack against the black king. Just when it looked as if the black king found a safer place, White came up with another powerful idea (see diagram).
